Endorsements Announcement: Carpenters Union and IBEW Local 666
I am thrilled today to announce that the KML Regional Council of Carpenters as well as International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 666 have endorsed my campaign for the 5th District seat on Richmond City Council.
Promoting economic opportunity for 5th District residents is a central theme in my campaign. City Council can make a difference through application of progressive economic development standards and promotion of workforce development programs to help residents attain living-wage jobs and build careers. I have been a strong supporter of organized labor since I helped lead student support for library workers in a successful strike to protect health care benefits as a college student nearly thirty years ago, and I have a long track record of policy advocacy for progressive economic development policies.
Here in Richmond, I have played an instrumental role in pushing more resources into workforce development initiatives as the first director of the City’s Office of Community Wealth Building, which serves thousands of City residents annually and which has launched the state’s first Living Wage Certification Program for area employers. Now it’s time to take the next step by assuring that all economic development projects involving city funding or resources include firm commitments to fair labor standards and to paying family-sustaining wages, and by promoting apprenticeship programs to launch more Richmond residents into successful careers in the trades.
I’m honored to have the support of the Carpenters Union and IBEW Local 666, and look forward to working with them to fight for progressive economic development and family-sustaining jobs as a member of City Council.
